Certified Network Administrator Training

UNIX Administrator

1) Warm up before class and review after class
2) Do home works and projects as much as you can
3) Practice at home – dial in to the school data center. Following is how you dial in using TCP/IP telnet session from your home based PC:
a) Make a user name for yourself and give it to me, I need it to create a UNIX account for you to login. Make sure you do it before you leave. Example: username for Smith Richard will be srichard
b) Get on internet
c) Open a telnet window: click start, click run, type “telnet 216.211.197.111” and hit enter
d) You will see a login prompt, enter your username as login name, then enter password and hit enter. You should see now a command prompt.
e) Type “rsh unix33”, you will see “Password:” prompt, don’t enter anything just hit enter.
f) You will see a login prompt again, enter root as login name then hit enter, you will access
to one of the unix systems in class room unix33. You can do your practice on this box now

1) Material from the school – Solaris UNIX Administration I and II (The books with blue cover). Talk to Winnie for this.
2) Material from Sun/IBM/HP/Veritas/RedHat/Oracle websites
a) www.sun.com – hardware/servers/Certification Exams information
b) docs.sun.com – Sun’s documentations website
c) sunsolve.sun.com – troubleshoot, white paper, Sun alerts, FAQ, etc
d) sunfreeware.com – free software such as Samba, top, tcpdump, gcc, sendmail, etc
e) veritas.com – optional
f) www.ibm.com and www.hp.com – optional
g) www.redhat.com – Most popular Linux OS
h) otn.oracle.com – you can download Oracle 10g here
3) Material from instructor – Syllabus/handouts/homework/exams will be given to the class by instructor. After you get your UNIX account, you can use ftp application to get instructor’s materials packed into zip files in following way:
a) Get on internet
b) Click start, then run, enter ftp –i 216.211.197.111 and hit enter
c) Enter your username and password, then you should see a ftp> prompt
d) Enter following commands on ftp> prompt:
i) cd /home/chenchen/source/zips
ii) ls (to double check if you see all zip files)
iii) bin / hash
iv) mget * (transmission will start at this point)
v) by (to exit from remote)
e) Click start, then click run and enter cmd, then hit enter. You will open a command line window. You should be able to see all zip files here from the current directory.
4) Material from other resources, for those who want to take the Certification Exams - books from market WITH example exams. You can search them from internet. Following are some examples:

Key Points for Successfully Passing the Exams
Do not go for the exams before you finish following:
1) Read the materials mentioned above and have a solid understanding on Solaris Unix Administration
2) Do hands-on exercises and projects. This is very important.
3) Do lots of sample questions, say 1000+ and keep all the correct answer in your mind.
Why? Because the next exam is always more difficult…
